OQEP and TotalEnergies Visit Marsa Bunkering LNG Plant

OQEP’s CEO, Ahmed Al Azkawi, visited the Marsa Bunkering LNG plant construction site, alongside the partners in TotalEnergies, to overlook progress of the project. The Marsa LNG plant, located in the port of Sohar, is an innovative and one-of-a-kind project aiming to support Oman’s energy transition. This plant encompasses renewable power generation alongside its upstream gas production and downstream gas liquefaction operations. A 300MWp (700 GWh/y) solar plant will be built to supply 100% of the Marsa LNG plant and which will be entirely driven by electricity. Accordingly, the plant compensates 100% of its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions making it the lowest GHG emissions intensity LNG plant ever built worldwide.

The project is 80% owned by TotalEnergies and 20% owned by OQEP and operations are planned to begin in the first quarter of 2028. The plant contains a train of 1MTPA with a 165,000m3 Tank and features the first LNG onshore Bunkering Hub in the Middle East, setting it as a key player and strong competitor in the region.

As part of the visit to Sohar, Ahmed Al Azkawi met His Excellency Mohammed bin Sulaiman Al Kindi, Governor of Al Batinah North, to discussing future development projects in the governorate. OQEP is committed to contributing to the social and economic development of the communities and supporting them to thrive and prosper.
